Every Picture Tells a Story

The Making of art

Every photograph has a story and this is a selection of some of my favourite images and how I captured them. Make a cup of coffee or tea, sit down and take your time, read the stories, click on any of the images for a better look and let the artwork choose you.

For performance purposes these are lower resolution versions of the high resolution images you will find in my store.

The Shearing Shed

16-05-2021

This old sheep shearing shed is iconic Australian and well over 50 years old. I met Gordon, the owner of the lot this shed sits on while doing portraits nearby. Gordon invited me to use the shed any time for portrait shoots, just to let him know. This shot was taken after one of those shoots, the sun had set behind the shed so I set my camera up on the tripod and took seven bracketed shots so that I could combine them afterwards to get all the detail.

Capital Sunrise Framed

19-05-2019

Sometimes you find a shot when you are not even looking. I had not planned to shoot this image on a the chilly morning of 19 May 2019, I had another shot in mind and one that I have not yet taken, but as I walked past these trees framing the image I saw it. The autumn leaves on the branches, their rich reds and oranges reflected in the morning sky. The sun not yet over the horizon. The shot chose me. I shot only 5 shots of this scene that morning, all long exposures before the colours were gone. This one was not the longest but the shot that spoke to me. I did a 60 second exposure and even though the picture breaks the rules of composition with the horizon being in the center, the autumn trees compensate by framing it.

This Image Achieved a Bronze Award in the 2019 Epson Pano Awards and won the monthly Australian photography magazine competition for for june 2019

Eilean Donan

14-04-2018

This image of Eilean Donan Castle, was taken in April 2018. Eilean Donan is recognised as one of the most iconic images of Scotland all over the world. Situated on an island in the Scottish Highlands at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery. Using Neutral Density Filters and long exposures I was able to eliminate the moving people as it was quite a busy afternoon. This has to be my favourite castle in Scotland, so much so I went back the next day to see if I could get a better shot but it was not to be.

Midnight in the Big Smoke

17-03-2018

This is my favourite night shot. This shot was taken in Kiribilli in Sydney in 2018 where were spending the weekend after attending a friends wedding. Taken at midnight after returning from the wedding reception, we stopped along the shore and set up the camera. The 25 Second exposure was just long enough to capture a little movement on the stars and burn in the bright colours of the Sydney skyline. At the time my wife had just had a melanoma cut out of her head and skin removed from behind her ear to replace it, she waited patiently without complaint for about an hour while I fiddled to get the perfect shot I had envisaged despite a splitting headache from the surgery a few days before.
